Greater Portland Metro will be making the following changes to service beginning June 22.

Route 1 service restored to Atlantic Street and Eastern Promenade: Metro will restore service to the southern section of Munjoy Hill, on Eastern Promenade and Atlantic Street, on a trial basis. This segment of service was initially removed in August 2023 due to low ridership and operational challenges. If ridership justifies continued service to this area, Metro will work with the City of Portland explore changes to parking and circulation that will alleviate the operational concerns.

Route 5 minor schedule changes: Metro will make minor changes to Route 5 weekday service to reduce unnecessary mid-route layovers and improve travel times between Maine Mall and downtown. Passengers boarding inbound buses along Park Avenue should consult the new schedule. Most passengers will not be affected.

Route 21 schedule changes: Route 21 has historically operated out of step with the printed schedule on weekday and Saturday evenings, which became apparent to Metro shortly after we took over operating South Portland’s bus routes in December 2024. The printed schedule did not allow sufficient travel time to make the full round trip, and as a result, Route 21 had the worst on-time performance in Metro’s system. The schedule changes will bring the schedule in line with what Route 21’s actual run time. Actual service is not changing significantly; however, the printed schedules should align much more closely with the route’s actual service.

BREEZ schedule changes: Minor changes to the BREEZ schedule will be implemented to reduce unnecessary mid-route layovers. Additional BREEZ service will be announced in the coming days.

Metro Connect service expansion: Metro will expand Metro Connect service to the south and west, to a zone that roughly serves Casco Bay to the east, Interstate 95 and Eureka Road to the west, the Portland city line to the south, and the Cumberland Town Line to the north. The decision to expand this zone was made after evaluating the initial service area. Metro determined that the Metro Connect vehicle has the capacity to serve a larger area. The expanded zone should connect more Falmouth residents and visitors to more destinations, including the West Falmouth Hannaford and Metro Route 9B. The expanded coverage zone is shown below.
